OTSU’s iconic Pints & Politics is fast approaching, and with that, we wanted to give you some tips and tricks on how to talk about politics non-partisanly. As many of you may know, non-partisanship is a key pillar of the OTSU that ensures we represent the interests and values of all students; however, that doesn’t mean we don’t get political! Instead of leaning toward one political ideology, our team continues to look to foster constructive dialogue that respects diverse perspectives, encourages critical thinking and centres on evidence-based solutions.

So, how can you navigate political conversations in a non-partisan way? Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind:

  1. Listen actively: One of the most important aspects of non-partisan discussion is active listening! Take the time to genuinely hear what others say, even if their viewpoints differ. Listening allows for better understanding and opens the door for respectful dialogue.
  2. Stay informed: Before engaging in political discussions, take the time to educate yourself on various issues. Understand the facts, different viewpoints, and potential implications of different policies. Being well-informed will enable you to contribute meaningfully to the conversation.
  3. Focus on issues, not personalities: In non-partisan discussions, it's crucial to focus on the substance of the issues rather than the personalities or affiliations of individuals involved. Keep the conversation centred on policies, values, and their impacts rather than getting caught up in personal attacks or character judgments.
  4. Respect diverse perspectives: Recognize that people come from different backgrounds and experiences, which shape their political beliefs. Respectfully acknowledge and consider diverse perspectives, even if you disagree with them. Embrace the opportunity to learn from others and broaden your understanding of complex issues.
  5. Avoid heated arguments: While passionate discussions can be productive, avoiding descending into heated arguments or confrontations is essential. If a conversation becomes tense or unproductive, take a step back and refocus on finding common ground or areas of agreement.
  6. Be open-minded and willing to compromise: Non-partisan dialogue requires a willingness to be open-minded and flexible. Be willing to reconsider your viewpoints based on new information and be open to finding compromises that address the needs and concerns of different stakeholders.
  7. Maintain civility and courtesy: Above all, maintain civility and courtesy in your interactions with others, even when you strongly disagree. Treat others respectfully, refrain from personal attacks or derogatory language, and strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants.

Remember, the goal is not to avoid politics altogether but to approach them with openness, respect, and a commitment to understanding diverse perspectives. So, grab a pint, join the conversation, and let's make Pints & Politics a forum for constructive dialogue and meaningful engagement.
