Keeping you happy and healthy is a big priority for us, which is why we have developed the Student Health & Dental Insurance Plan!

Our top-notch team compiled a list of all the ways students need to be covered that might not fall under the provincial health plan (i.e. prescription, dental, vision, and more).

What do I get?

While we hope you don’t need it all, we made sure that your Health Plan rounded all the bases. You are covered for Prescription Drugs, Vision, Dental, Health Practitioners, Orthotics, Travel Insurance and way more!

What if i want to opt-out?

If you’re a full-time student at Ontario Tech University you are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Plan as part of your fees.

With that said, we understand that you might have coverage elsewhere and won’t need to make use of the sweet plan we developed! That’s totally fine with us, but there are a few things to note before you go off and plan to take over the world. 

Paid your Fees?

To be eligible to opt-out you must have paid your fees in full before the deadline.

Have additional coverage?

The next step is to have proof that you have an alternative health and dental coverage. We take your health seriously and want to make sure that you are covered no matter what. You can also combine your health plan with your parents for double coverage!

Then, visit Gallivan and opt-out online before the deadline. The before the deadline part is super important.

Who can I contact about the OTSU Health Plan?

If your question requires a personal touch you can always email the Student Service Coordinator at uoitplan@mystudentplan.ca.

Or, if you’re around campus you can drop by the office at UL 100 in the Student Union Office (portables behind the North Campus library).

Where can I get my benefits card?

Your benefits card can be obtained right here. You may store the card either physically or digitally, both work!

How do I submit a claim?

You can submit claims either manually or online.

Manual claims are done through Great West Life and take about 3-4 weeks to process. Online claims can be submitted here and have a 7-10 business day process time- so pick the option that works best for you!

Are International Students covered?

We look out for our all of our students so we made sure that international students are also covered for extended health coverage (i.e. prescription, dental, vision, etc.).

In addition to the Ontario Tech Student Union health plan, international students are also enrolled in the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) which is administered through the Ontario Tech International Office. Email them for more details at uhip@uoit.ca

Do UHIP and the OTSU Health and Dental Plan cover the same benefits?

These two health plans do not cover the same benefits. UHIP is the equivalent of provincial health care for international students so does not include many of the add-ons included in the UOIT SU Health and Dental Plan.

How much do I pay for the plan?

It depends!

Fall start students pay $213.06 CAD for a coverage period from September 1st to August 31st. Students who start their academic year in the Winter term pay $176.33 CAD for a coverage period of January 1st to August 31st. Spring/Summer term starting students pay $139.67 CAD for a coverage period from May 1st to August 31st.

Am I able to add dependents to this plan?

You certainly are! If you are eligible you can add dependents (limited to partners and children) at the beginning of your academic year and have to completed annually. You can request to add a dependent online.

Just to note, there is an additional cost associated with adding a dependent.

Do I have to Opt-Out every year?

Starting September 2019, if you Opt-Out of the Health and Dental Plan you are no longer automatically renewed each term. 

If you decide you would like to renew your Health and Dental Plan you have to opt back in before the September 30th Deadline at the start of each school year. 

If you are a student that goes on a co-op placement, this process is voided and you have to manually Opt-Out again the next September should you choose to.
